Description: In relation with National Indigenous History Month and Pride Month, the CCPA Indigenous Initiatives brings special guest Naatoyi’ikinasoyi (Shawn Singer) to speak to Indigenous perspectives on LGBTQIA2S+

Bio: My name is Naatoyi’ikinasoyi (Shawn Singer) of the Akainai nation within the Blackfoot Confederacy. I have been a social worker since 1996 working in addictions, youth & families and supporting homeless initiatives.

Previously I was the acting Executive Director for the Sikoohkotoki Friendship Society in Lethbridge, Alberta. In this position I developed Blackfoot cultural activities for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous people in our urban setting. I also managed all programs and activities in our facility. In addition, I sat on various committees that are focused on improving the lives of urban Indigenous people. Moreover, I worked for the City of Lethbridge in Community and Social Development where I assisted the city with communications, engagement and protocols with Indigenous people and contributed to reconciliation and anti-racism purposes.

I am educated as a Social Worker with a Bachelor of Social Work in addition hold a Master’s degree in Education both from University of Calgary. Further to this, I have been researching Blackfoot 2-Spirit people and excited to discover historical accounts of individuals along with specific gender names. I am hopeful that this newfound traditional knowledge would contribute to a more inclusive Blackfoot spiritual practice. I am also a Blackfoot speaker and artist. I enjoy various mediums of art, from painting to creating garments. I am excited about my new role of Indigenous Relations Consultant with the Calgary Indigenous Relations Office for the City of Calgary and look forward to joining you all in an exciting journey forward, getting to know all of you and to contribute to our efforts in providing safe, respectful, and inclusive environments for our Indigenous and non-Indigenous community.
