Event Overview:

Loneliness is rising, and many people lack the emotional support they need. This session will explore whether artificial intelligence can help fill that gap by examining whether AI can offer forms of empathy that rival—and in some cases appear to surpass—human support. We will  will also examine how some individuals are forming meaningful emotional connections with AI companions, finding comfort and a sense of connection in ways that continue to challenge current assumptions in research.

At the same time, we will address an important risk: sycophantic AI systems that uncritically validate harmful thinking or reinforce delusional beliefs. In mental health and counselling contexts, this kind of affirmation can pose serious concerns. While empathic AI holds significant promise, this session will emphasize the importance of developing and using these technologies thoughtfully, ethically, and with care.

Meet Your Presenter:

Michael Inzlicht is a Professor of Psychology at the University of Toronto. He studies the paradoxes of human motivation, asking why people both avoid and find meaning in effort, and how AI is reshaping behavior and wellbeing. His work has been recognized among the top 1% of most-cited psychologists worldwide.
