Event Overview:

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly shaping how counselling and mental health services are delivered, from clinical documentation and assessment tools to digital supports and decision-making systems. This session offers a clear and accessible introduction to what AI is, how it is being used across health and social services, and why ethical awareness is essential as these technologies become more integrated into practice. Participants will explore core principles of AI ethics—such as privacy, informed consent, fairness, transparency, and professional responsibility—and consider how these principles apply to real clinical situations. Using practical, real-world examples, the session will support participants in critically evaluating emerging AI tools and understanding both their benefits and limitations. Attendees will leave with a stronger foundation for making thoughtful, client-centred decisions about the responsible and ethical use of AI within their own clinical and professional settings.


Meet Your Presenter:

Candice Alder is a clinical counsellor and AI ethicist, as well as an IEEE CertifAIEd authorized assessor of emerging AI systems, a teaching fellow with the Center for AI and Digital Policy, and the principal consultant/co-founder at Synthetica. As the President of the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors, Candice is the author of Canada's first guideline for the ethical integration of AI into clinical practice.
