Webinar Description:

As educators and helping professionals prepare for the 2020 school year, we are in uncharted waters. Many mental health professionals acknowledge that teachers must give emotional support to returning students, and that they should be prepared to provide 'trauma-informed practices'. (Canadian Teachers' Federation).

Mindfulness can provide a range of regulation tools and strategies to draw upon when you feel stressed or overwhelmed.

Part of the response to COVID-19 should involve a plan for all provinces to strengthen the social-emotional learning components of their curricula, says the executive director of the Ontario Physical and Health Education Association. (Ben Nelms/CBC)

Trauma-sensitive, or trauma-informed, practice means that we have a basic understanding of trauma in the context of our work. With trauma-sensitive mindfulness, we apply this concept to mindfulness instruction. As teachers, we commit to recognizing trauma, responding to it skillfully, and taking pre-emptive steps to ensure that students aren’t re-traumatizing themselves under our watch.

Topics that will be covered:
•    What is Mindfulness in an educational context?
•    What are the benefits?
•    How can it be practiced?
•    How Stress and Trauma Affect the Brain
•    Trauma-Sensitive Mindfulness Modifications
