Description - Introductory

Counselors sometimes work with clients who are argumentative and/or resistant. These clients may be unwilling to accept help for various reasons; past abuse by authority figures, the gender of the counselor, or attending sessions because they are instructed to by employers, the courts, or family members.

Difficult, resistant clients may be very perceptive and the need to control leads to using their intuitive observations to ‘push our buttons’. Being aware of our weak spots and addressing them in terms of the clients’ need to control us shifts the focus back on the clients. The challenge is deciding how best to help difficult, resistant clients. We may not be the best fit.

This webinar addresses the issues counsellors may face when working with difficult, resistant clients and ways to help them move forward on their healing journey. We also will discuss counselors’ feelings and mental processes so they do not get caught up in the clients’ issues.
