Description -

Similar to many other systems, education is rooted in a history of racism and oppression. This means that the information professionals carry into their fields often leads to the perpetuation of injustice. Professionals who desire to be agents of change within their fields must seek opportunities to examine and critique their knowledge, and be open to challenging the status quo within their respective fields. In this Professional Development Session, Social Worker and Therapist Breanna Chanelle Phillip will lead participants in conversations and activities that offer the opportunity to examine and critique their Counselling knowledge from an anti-racism lens.

Learning Objectives:

  • Opportunity to examine implicit biases and their impacts on practice
  • Increased understanding of the impacts of systemic racism on counselling knowledge and methods
  • Strengthen ability to examine counselling methods and interventions from an anti-racism lens
  • Introduction to counselling methods and interventions that are culturally relevant to some Black individuals and communities
