Description
This discussion panel is the 2nd in our Meeting of the Minds series designed to bring together those working in counsellor education as instructors, supervisors, and/or program coordinators to share best practices and develop informed approaches to the online/telehealth experience. This specific panel will explore the challenges and ways forward for shifting face-to-face counselling courses to an online platform while still achieving the quality instruction that is expected of our educational institutions as one of the gatekeepers to our profession. We will be joined by three panel members who bring with them vast experience and knowledge in working in online instruction within the counselling field, and who will be able to respond to your questions that represent the current challenges of this “new normal” of educational design.
Panelists
Michael Sorsdahl has been a practicing psychotherapist for 15 years and recently a Registered Psychologist in BC and Alberta based on his MA in Counselling Psychology. He completed his PhD in Education, focused on Counselling, which informs much of his practice. He is the founder of Juvenation, which is a Wellness Centre offering counselling, coaching, and education in Duncan and in Victoria, BC. He instructs at UVic, UBC, and ULeth in their Counselling Psychology programs. Michael is currently the Chair of the Ethics Committee – Complaints Division and President of the Counsellor Educator and Supervisors Chapter.
Dr. Roberta Borgen (Neault), President of Life Strategies Ltd. / Adjunct Professor for UBC in Counselling Psychology, brings extensive experience teaching and developing online courses in counselling, career management, and business programs, locally and internationally, since 2001. Roberta previously chaired the CCPA’s Counsellor Educators and Supervisors chapter and BC Chapter.
For the past fifteen years Simon Nuttgens has worked as an Associate Professor with the Graduate Centre for Applied Psychology (GCAP) at Athabasca University. GCAP’s blended delivery model has afforded Simon the opportunity to create and deliver online coursework drawing upon innovative technologies and distance learning pedagogy. His areas of instructional focus include ethics, counselling theory, and health psychology. Simon also provides counseling and consultation services for a large social services agency in Penticton, British Columbia.
Lawrence Murphy is the founder of Worldwide Therapy Online, the world’s first online clinical practice, established in 1994. In collaboration with the National Board for Certified Counselors, he authored the first ethical code for online counselling. Through Therapy Online’s Research Institute, Lawrence and his colleagues publish regularly in the academic literature, including their seminal 1998 work When Writing Helps To Heal: Email as Therapy, which has been cited more than 350 times. Therapy Online delivers 2 levels of training in cybercounselling. To date, they have trained more than 1200 clinicians worldwide. Therapy Online also licenses software to individuals and agencies keen to deliver services online. Lawrence received his MA in Counselling Psychology from UBC in 1995 and holds an adjunct appointment and teaches in the Faculty of Social Work at U of T.
