Presented by Dr. Matthew Kerr

Dr. Matthew Kerr is a clinical psychologist, both on staff at the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre, and in an active private practice. He has been working with those affected by childhood and complex trauma, including those living with PTSD and Dissociative Disorders for over 12 years. He has spoken publicly on the impact of childhood trauma on mental health and emotional development, both at the Royal and at numerous workshops and conferences.

Workshop summary:

Childhood abuse and maltreatment is a significant predictor of many forms of mental-ill health. Chronic victimization in childhood can have long-lasting impacts on neuro-cognitive, emotional, and relational development, which can significantly impact attempts at healing and recovery, and negatively interfere with the psychotherapeutic process. Understanding how childhood trauma affects a developing self, how this can manifest in difficulties in adulthood, and how to recognize and work with these effects in the therapy office is essential for being able to optimally support these clients. This workshop will educate participants on the impacts of trauma across multiple domains, as well as provide examples of how to identify and treat these impacts in the context of counselling and psychotherapy.
