Derek Scott is a registered social worker and certified IFS (Internal Family Systems) therapist with an international online practice based near Toronto, Canada. He is the founder of IFSCA– an organization dedicated to bringing awareness of the IFS model to counsellors and therapists in Canada and beyond. Through IFSCA he offers courses teaching the IFS model online and in person at his retreat centre, Namaskar. He has taken the highest level of IFS training (level three) 3 times. Derek has worked in the field of counselling/therapy for over 35 years, including 15 years working exclusively as an IFS therapist and 18 years as an AIDS counsellor specializing in multiple loss.
Workshop summary:
Internal Family Systems is an evidence-based therapy and an emerging model of psychotherapy that seeks to understand and incorporate the different complex and multi-faceted personality parts into therapeutic work.
This 1-day training is led by Derek Scott RSW, Certified IFS therapist who has been working with and teaching Internal Family systems for over 15 years.
Through a variety of teaching methods, participants will develop an understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of the model and what differentiates it from other models. Participants will also develop further understanding of the challenge of the multiplicity paradigm, the personality as a system, the specific roles parts play as well as how healing occurs within the Internal Family System framework including the role of Self, and the importance of facilitating the Self-to-part connection.
Prior to the day participants will be sent a link to an exclusive video featuring IFS founder Dick Schwartz facilitating an “unburdening” during a therapy session. The day itself will start with a psychodramatic illustration of the model followed by a didactic presentation with lots of time for Q&A. After this participants will be invited into an experiential exercise to identify some of their own parts. The afternoon will consist of a teaching video and a live demonstration with a volunteer. We will wrap up the day with a discussion of the role of our “therapist parts”, the opportunity for further questions to be answered and a discussion of next steps.
