Abstract:

This one-hour session explores how cultural humility serves as a vital part of the continuum of cultural competency. Participants will reflect on how psychological safety is not assumed, but co-created through an ongoing commitment to self-awareness, power analysis, and relational accountability. The session will revisit the original intent behind cultural competency, introduce the steps of becoming culturally competent along the continuum, and challenge participants to integrate humility and responsiveness into their clinical practice. Together, we will examine how culturally safe care requires more than knowledge, it demands ongoing critical reflection, curiosity, and conscious action.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify and describe the five progressive steps of becoming culturally competent.
  2. Explain how cultural humility functions within the broader cultural competency continuum.
  3. Reflect on the role of self-awareness, power dynamics, and positionality in culturally responsive practice.
  4. Explore how cultural humility contributes to the co-creation of psychological safety in psychotherapy.
  5. Apply practical strategies to integrate cultural humility into clinical relationships.
