Webinar Description:

The topic of gifts in therapy has received limited attention in training programs and supervision yet therapists encounter these experiences throughout their counselling careers. Being offered a gift can be a client’s expression of gratitude and appreciation for the contributions made by the work of the therapist. However, there are multiple meanings and considerations inherent in what initially appears to be a straightforward and uncomplicated gesture. Ethical dilemmas and challenges can arise. Supervisors hold ultimate responsibility for promoting the ethical and professional practice of trainees. This webinar examines the scholarly literature and ethical guidelines on this timely topic. Important considerations for the decision-making process of accepting or declining gifts are identified. Best practices and strategies are provided to promote client welfare, attend to diversity, and enhance the supervisory alliance.

Presenter: Judy Chew, MSW,  PhD. RPsych.
