Join Dr. Marvin McDonald and Maggie Chang for an virtual two-part series "Exploring Multilingual Possibilities in Multicultural Counselling"

The first part will focus on strengtheing counselling professionals' capacities (personal & organizational) to provide multilingual counselling.
The second part will focus on strengthening supervision for multilingual counselling.
This series is eligible for 2 CEC's. Please note: Attendance to both are required. Each session will be recorded.
Description
Multicultural counselling is becoming increasingly important both in Canada and internationally. As the Canadian counselling profession responds to the growing need for culturally inclusive services, supervisors, counsellors, clients, and researchers are engaging more frequently in multilingual practices. Traditionally, multilingual professional practice has relied heavily on counsellors who are themselves multilingual. However, there is a growing recognition that monolingual professionals also need to develop the skills to work effectively with multilingual clients.
With the right training, counsellors can better support clients' code-switching—adapting between languages or dialects—thereby enhancing the counselling process and making it more culturally appropriate. For instance, a counsellor asking a Mandarin-speaking client, "How does this land for you?" may not be as clear or meaningful as asking, "Does this make sense?" A monolingual counsellor who is sensitive to language differences and strives to communicate in ways that are easier to understand can significantly strengthen the therapeutic relationship.
About the Presenters:
Dr. Marvin McDonald is passionate in supporting indigenous healing practices in collaboration with professional health communities. Connecting across communities, professions, and worldviews is at the heart of his aspirations.
Maggie Chang is passionate about culturally-specific healing approaches, and multicultural and multilingual counselling. She hopes to support individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds through counselling.
