Promoting Professionalism in Clinical Supervision: Embracing Supervisory Identity and Illuminating Competence

Description:

This one-day advanced-level workshop is designed to promote professionalism in the practice of clinical supervision. Participants will further consolidate their professional identity as a clinical supervisor through targeted concept refinement and skill development by integrating prior conceptual and skill-based learning with a heightened critical analytic focus. Areas of focus include developing a framework for clinical supervision sessions, documenting supervision, engaging in difficult conversations within the supervisory relationship, exploring a variety of approaches to assessment and evaluation; and reflecting on one’s personal and professional identity as a clinical supervisor. 

Learning Outcomes:

  • Identify the differences between clinical supervision and other supporting roles
  • Establish a framework for comprehensive clinical supervision sessions
  • Overview of documentation in supervision
  • Discuss how to have difficult conversations with supervisees
  • Identify action plans to address challenges in supervision
  • Discuss fair evaluation and steps in evaluation
  • Examine different approaches to assessment, feedback, and evaluation
  • Solidify professional identity as a clinical supervisor
  • Expanding self-care repertoire

Format: whole group discussions and sharing, small group work on professional activities and roles, small group work on establishing a framework for supervision sessions; case study reviews by small groups, review of a video session, case drawing, checklists and forms in evaluation, art activity.

Presenters:

Blythe Shepard, Ph.D., CCC-S, is of British and Kanien'kehá:ka ancestry, a professor at the University of Lethbridge, and co-editor of the Clinical Supervision of the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Profession.

 

 

 

 

 

Lori Rudniski, M.Ed (Psych), CCC., CCC-S, is the director of a long-term counselling centre, instructor at the University of Manitoba and a CCC-S. She provides supervision for practicing counsellors and for university practicum students.
